Welcome to the Wheal Jane Group Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of Wheals, the new email newsletter of the Wheal Jane Group.

The newsletter has been launched to coincide with the 25th anniversary year of three of the Group's businesses; Wheal Jane Consultancy, Carnon Contracting and the South Crofty Collection.

Incredibly, it is also fifteen years since the Wheal Jane Group was formed and established its base at Wheal Jane.

The Group's two principal goals are; firstly, to develop our businesses serving the civil engineering and property sectors primarily in the South West; and secondly, to deliver an appropriate and productive future for the Wheal Jane site.

Twenty-five years ago, the formation of these companies was part of a huge effort to improve efficiency and to diversify the mining operations at Wheal Jane and South Crofty to provide additional financial support.

Ultimately, the mines could not be saved, but the companies themselves have continued. All have endured the dramatic closure of Wheal Jane in 1991, the South Crofty Public Share issue of 1994, and its ultimate closure in 1998.

Just surviving such turbulent times has been an achievement to be celebrated, but the Company's historic pedigree and dedicated workforce has enabled it to grow even through the current recession.

The secrets of our success are simply that we offer competitive, quality services and constantly adapt to changing times and demands.

In the meantime, we have been steadily transforming the site into a unique asset for Cornwall, creating jobs, opportunities and innovation.

Many people's perception of Wheal Jane is simply that of an abandoned mine site. We hope our occasional newsletters will change this view and that you will find them interesting and informative.

Latest Masterplan Milestone Gets Underway

The Masterplan for the Wheal Jane site which was adopted by Cornwall Council in 2011 has been moving forward steadily. Work started in March on the latest project within the Masterplan proposals which see the site developing progressively as a specialist Earth Science business cluster.

The project is to construct a new office block extension to the existing building at the entrance to the site. The state-of-the-art building will provide urgently-needed additional office accommodation for tenants Wardell Armstrong International, and at the same time provide a dramatic, landscaped entrance to the Wheal Jane Earth Science Park.

The Baldhu Office at Wheal Jane is part financed by the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme 2007-2013. The project has secured investment of £960,000 from the ERDF Programme towards the £1.8million development of the site. The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is the Managing Authority for the European Regional Development Fund Programme, which is one of the funds established by the European Commission to help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support local businesses and create jobs.

When the new extension is completed later this year, Wardell Armstrong will move their activities into the new building whilst the existing building is completely refurbished and re-clad to match the new extension. The whole project is due for completion in early 2014.

Other projects within the Masterplan which are moving forward include a small hydroelectricity generating scheme which received planning consent in May this year, and the extension, upgrading and refurbishment of the offices and laboratory complex in the headworks area of the site on which it is hoped work will begin later this year.

Our Wheal Jane Masterplan website is currently under construction.

First UK Permit Keeps Wheal Jane Ahead of the Game

Working closely with the local authorities and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Wheal Jane Limited has become the first, and currently the only, site in the UK to hold a bespoke permit issued by the Environment Agency which allows us to accept controlled waste and waste from the extractive industries for the purpose of the rehabilitation and engineering of the tailings facility at Wheal Jane.  The Company’s further accreditations include ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

The Company’s substantial investment in securing these national and international standards, combined with employing a fully qualified COTC Supervisor in Waste Management with many years experience and knowledge, demonstrates the Company’s commitment to 100% recovery and re-use of material imported to the site for use in the restoration, remediation and development of the Wheal Jane site.

With increasing emphasis on the production of Waste Recovery Plans and an audit trail to ensure that waste materials are appropriately and safely dealt with, the setup at Wheal Jane can ensure 100% recovery and 100% peace of mind that the material has been handled and treated in full compliance with the appropriate legislation. All producers of waste have a duty of care to demonstrate compliance through the production of Waste Management Plans, and can actually benefit from carbon reduction schemes and environmental awards by doing so.

Exeter University 2013 Wheal Jane Award Winner Announced

This year’s Exeter University Wheal Jane award for the Best Integrated Renewable Energy System has been won by Richard Baker.  Richard’s undergraduate dissertation entitled Monitoring and Data Acquisition for Small & Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) and Experimental Processes; “removing barriers of cost and complexity” looks at issues relating to the difficulties faced by businesses and organisations in monitoring and managing their energy usage and requirements.

Not content with identifying and researching this very practical and very relevant issue for businesses, Richard has gone on to design, build and test a data collection and analysis system for this application.  Richard plans to continue to develop the system to suit businesses of all sizes and even whole towns.

Richard’s studies have also encompassed focus on the planned development of Smartgrid in Cornwall.  The restricted capacity of Cornwall’s main national grid connection to enable the export of power generated within the county is a major problem.  Cornwall is already at the forefront of renewable energy development, and is well placed to continue in this position providing the appropriate export infrastructure is put in place. A delay in providing this capacity will impact on projects planned throughout the county such as those planned at Wheal Jane.

It is good to see some focus being put onto this major issue which has to some degree been overlooked in recent times, despite the huge potential for renewable generation in Cornwall.

Richard is planning to visit Wheal Jane to understand more about the development plans for the site, and the Company is looking forward to supporting and working with Richard in the future.

Carnon Contracting

Milestone for Solar PV

The Wheal Jane Group civil engineering company Carnon Contracting has now worked on solar PV installations exceeding 50MW.
Since performing a pivotal role in delivering the first commercial-scale solar PV installation in the South West at Wheal Jane, Carnon Contracting has worked on 14 solar farms in the UK. Working for various developers, Carnon Contracting has developed specialist expertise in the fast, efficient and cost-effective delivery of commercial-scale solar PV installations.
The most recent projects have taken Carnon Contracting out of the South West as far afield as Norfolk where two projects alone have accounted for in excess of 79,000 panels, together generating over 19MW of electricity.
Despite the trials and tribulations affecting the solar PV industry arising from the EU and UK government, our partners are confident in the future prospects of solar PV, and tenders for a further 35MW are currently in discussion.
